God love Harlan, defender of us all. I have a love/hate thing with him-- there's nothing that will make you quake in your shoes more than sitting next to him on a writers' panel at a convention and hoping to God you don't piss him off. He is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT in everything he says about paying writers. The recent writers' strike in Hollywood? It was about giving a few pennies per viewing/sale/redistribution to the writer who CREATED THE DAMNED WORK TO BEGIN WITH-- the same work off of which the television studies earn literally millions. Yeah, Harlan is a trip, and he one scary egotistical S.O.B. with a mind as sharp as a strap razor and a mouth to match. There's nothing like having an editor (who been such a thing all of three months) tell you you're snobbish because you won't give them a story for no payment but hey, they'll give you a contributor copy. That's the same person who stutters when I ask "If I tell that contributor copy to the grocery store and trade it for a loaf of bread, or send it to the electric copy to pay my monthly bill.
Yeah, go Harlan.
